Why  prepaid  medical  insurance?

Medical insurance is a more affordable way of funding your medical expenses. It is not the same as medical aid but will cover most of your medical bills up to certain limits. A prepaid medical insurance plan will pay you upfront even before you see your doctor. This will allow you to see your doctor immediately. No surprise medical bills. No waiting for payday.

Get a medical debit card to pay for your day-to-day medical bills.

Simply lodge a claim though your mobile app. Your claim will be processed and authorised even before you see the doctor. Funds will be loaded into your medical debit card and you can immediately see your doctor. Pay for the consult and any meds by swiping your debit card and uploading a photo of your invoice afterwards in the app.

How does medical insurance work?
Medical insurance is a type of cover that pays out when you need medical care. It is not medical aid but still offers benefits to cover your medical bills. From GP and specialist visits to maternity and hospital care, payouts will vary depending on the level of cover you choose. Day-to-day cover pays for out-of-hospital care. You can load a claim, the funds will be loaded into your card and you can pay your doctor directly. The hospital benefits need to be authorised and cover is up to a maximum payout per event to the hospital or service provider.
Will medical insurance pay the full bill?
Medical insurance pays out to a certain amount. This may not always cover the full bill. It depends on the doctor you choose to visit. The payout may be sufficient for the doctor’s entire fees but some service providers charge higher rates. You may then have to top up from your own pocket to cover the full bill. However, medical insurance plans attempt to cover most if not the entire consultation fee.
Does medical insurance cover pregnancy?
Pregnancy is not an illness but it is a medical condition and will be covered by medical insurance. This depends on the medical insurance plan that you choose. The maternity benefit may include antenatal (pre-birth) visits and childbirth in hospital (both natural delivery and emergency C-section). Prescription medication will also be covered up to a maximum payout per prescription. There is a waiting period for any condition and pre-existing pregnancies will not be covered. However, securing cover immediately will ensure that other medical conditions and any future pregnancies are covered.
Are only consultations covered?
Medical insurance includes other benefits beyond the doctor’s consultation fee. Additional benefits include prescription medication, blood tests and certain types of diagnostic imaging like x-rays. Eye wear is also covered under the optometry benefit. The payout for each of these additional benefits vary. Even if it does not cover the entire bill, medical insurance will provide you with some financial assistance at a time that you need it the most.
Can you have medical aid and medical insurance?
Yes. Medical aid and medical insurance are two different types of cover. You can have both and it may help you to top up where medical aid falls short. Medical aid offers more extensive benefits but it is expensive. Many South Africans opt for just a hospital plan medical aid which is more affordable. Medical insurance may be an option for day-to-day cover. The hospital benefit of a medical insurance plan may also be helpful in paying shortfalls in medical aid payouts when you are hospitalised.
