The Healthcare Consumer in South Africa
We understand that medical cover can be confusing at times with the range of products and plans on offer. Medical aid was the zenith of medical cover at one time, ensuring that South Africans could access private healthcare services, without having to pay from their own pocket. However, the industry has changed in recent years. Medical aid is not affordable for every South African nor does it provider complete cover for private healthcare.
South African consumers often find themselves without cover or out of pocket despite having medical aid largely due to insufficient coverage. The emergence of more affordable hospital insurance and medical insurance have provided South Africans with other choices although these product do not match the coverage provided by medical aid. MediPlan SA recognises the need for South Africans to make individual choices about their medical cover. Whether it is a matter of affordability of specific health and financial needs, we aim to provide South Africans with multiple choices to allow consumers to find one that best suits them. However, we also recognised the need for informing and educating South African consumers about these diverse healthcare products.
We work with financial service providers and their advertising agencies to ensure that South African consumers can find the right product for their budget and needs. MediPlan SA is not a financial service provider. We do not provide quotes or offer cover but instead help medical aids and insurers find consumers seeking for specific types of medical cover. Our role as an online portal is to connect the two parties – consumers on one end and medical aids or health insurers at the other.

Quotes provided through the MediPlan SA website is from registered financial service providers (FSP’s) in South Africa. MediPlan SA itself does not provide quotes or offer any cover. We are not involved in the transaction between the customer and financial services provider. We therefore cannot be held liable for any dispute arising from the provision of quotes or coverage serviced by the related medical scheme or insurer.
In the event of any dispute or complaint, we advise consumers to the Council of Medical Schemes or Short Term Insurance Ombudsman. We try our utmost to ensure that the businesses associated with the MediPlan SA adhere to fair and ethical practices. However, we cannot be held liable for the transactions, agreements, policies, services and business processes of these third party entities.
